I found some old National Geographic magazines at my local library and spent quite a while looking at them for painting images. Feathers and fins are spectacularly iridescent and I am naturally drawn to them. This photo was taken by Paul Zahn and his article was in the April 1973 issue about outlandish goldfish. I've been thinking about big goldfish lately since we pet sat two of Maire's for a few weeks between her home visits from college. They weren't this big or googly-eyed!
